EyePlex, (also sold as Occuplex®), is an all-natural eye care formula designed to help maintain healthy vision and eyes through the action of various antioxidant nutrients, provided in a softgel for superior bioavailability and stability. Epidemiological studies indicate that diets rich in antioxidants such as those contained in EyePlex (Vitamins C and E, Selenium as well as Beta-Carotene and other Carotenoids including Lutein and Zeaxanthin), are associated with a decreased incidence of age-related macular degeneration and also cataracts. DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), an essential omega-3 fatty acid, is also absolutely critical for the health of the retina. Macular degeneration is an eye condition in which there is gradual deterioration of a portion of the eye’s retina called the macula (the area of finest visual perception where the lens of the eye focuses an image). Macular degeneration has become a major health care issue, as it is the second most common cause of visual impairment in those over 65.
Lutein and Zeaxanthin are two key nutrients in EyePlex which appear to be more closely correlated with protection from macular degeneration as well as cataract development. Both Lutein and Zeaxanthin are highly concentrated in the macula of the eye and responsible for filtering out visible blue light, which may cause damage to eye tissue. Researchers believe that Lutein and Zeaxanthin protect the macula from light-induced damage by dying it yellow, thereby acting as our internal "natural sunglasses". As potent antioxidants, both Lutein and Zeaxanthin also provide protection to eye tissue by neutralizing free radicals.
EyePlex contains nutrients (Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Tocotrienols, Beta-Carotene - an antioxidant form of Vitamin A, other important carotenoids, Selenium, and Bilberry), which are most beneficial for optimal eye health as they provide protection from free radical/oxidative damage that results from many normal metabolic processes; exposure to oxidants in cigarette smoke; or environmental factors.
